Protocols/Standards at various layers of TCP/IP model

As learned in previous lessons, TCP/IP protocol suite consists of many different protocols and standards. Following table describes different protocols and standards operating at different layers of five layered TCP/IP model.

Layer Number Layer Name Protocol/Standard
Layer 5 Application Layer SMTP, HTTP, HTTPS, POP3, SNMP, FTP, SSH, Telnet
Layer 4 Transport Layer TCP (Transmission Control Protocol), UDP (User Datagram Protocol)
Layer 3 Network Layer IPv4, IPv6, ICMP, IGMP, IPSEC, ARP, MPLS
Layer 2 Datalink Layer Ethernet, PPP, Frame Relay, ATM
Layer 1 Physical Layer 10GBase-T, 10GBase-SR, 1000Base-TX, 100BaseTX, 1000BaseSX, 802.11
